If ever there was a day of absolute craze in school, it was Sports Day! This year was no different than the previous years. Everyone comes excited, dressed in their house colours, hyped on winning for their house!
Just in case you don't know this, at the beginning of the school year, Bright Horizons pupils and teachers are assembled into 4 houses - Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury and Neptune. This means that each house has about the same number of members across generations - each house has members from Year 1, Year 2, Year 3, Year 4, Year 5, Year 6, Year 7 and Year 8, as well as staff members. During the school year, each house member gathers points for their behaviour, academic progress, projects and competitions, respectfulness, being helpful etc. All the points are then added weekly to each house and announced at the school Assembly. On Sports Day, we all get a chance to add some more points to our houses. In the end, the winning houses get a reward - a trip, movie night, pizza party and so on. It's worth all the effort, you know!
Our Sports Day always starts with the big gathering in the gym where the school counsellor and our PE teacher explain the rules and announce the games. We are then guided by a teacher to the designated spots where another teacher runs the game and keeps score. We play according to houses and also age groups. This is a brief sketch of our reporter Nina's notes. As you can see, it was very fast-paced and exciting but our reporter was meticulous. Here are just some pieces of the reporter's notes...
At the beginning of the Sports Day we are gathered into our houses like this: Saturn, Mercury, Neptune and Jupiter. It's a very exciting event that happens every school year. It was Jupiter who won in the last two years, but this time - we'll see. Ms Đurić gives her announcement and the rules and - let the games begin!
We start with the wheelbarrow race. And Saturn won it! The 3-legged race begins - Saturn wins again!
Basketball starts! Saturn gets 3 points and a second later another 3 points and another 2 and another... I can't keep track any more, but Saturn won! However, Mercury is winning the second round...
Neptune won in the egg race this time, as well as in the tug-of-war. We are not even close to winning...
Saturn won the second round. Maybe we still have a chance.
The final balloon race was exciting and... Saturn won!!!
The official plan for Sports Day was detailed and quite challenging. We battled through basketball, wheelbarrow race, 3-legged race, caterpillar race, dance-off, egg-on-a-spoon race, tug-of-war, sack race, dodgeball, balloon train game, flag-in-the-middle, musical hoops, etc. Team spirit outweighed the results and we all supported each other throughout all the competitions.
Around lunchtime we had a break with some mindfulness activities and then continued with our final games.
After the competitions were finished, all the sports' points were added up to our points gathered during the school year in academics and work ethics and... drum roll.... we got our winners for the school year of 2022/2023!
4th place: Mercury 11.247
3rd place: Jupiter 11.325
2nd place: Neptune 12.351
1st place: Saturn 12.808
Congratulations to all the participants! Such wonderful school spirit! The chosen prizes will be awarded before the summer break! Woohooooo!
By the way, tomorrow is the last day of school and we will celebrate it at Water Day with a ton of fun activities connected to water! What a phenomenal day to greet the summer holidays!
