SPACE HORIZONS - WORLD SPACE WEEK PROJECT

When your mind is open there are no limits to what you can do! This is why we are constantly motivated to explore, do research, ask questions and create, innovate and imagine!

Our teachers talk to us about space and environment in every school year and every subject! For example, these are just some details from our spring projects in Year 3 in 2024!

Therefore, it is no wonder that we decided to join the worldwide project called World Space Week!

Our project was called SPACE HORIZONS and this is how we announced it at the official website:

We are organising an in-school event in our primary school. It will take place at the school Assembly with our main presentation, and then continue during the week as a cross-curricular project. Children from Year 1 to Year 8 will be learning about space, astronauts, climate change, technology and environment across many subjects (e.g. in English they will be reading stories about space and astronauts and expanding their space-related vocabulary, in science subjects they will be learning about how our planet was formed and how it changes, in History they will be learning about the history of space exploration, in PE they will have ‘astronaut training’ exercising, etc.) This will take place during the week and their regular lessons (8:30am-3pm).

And what a fun week it turned out to be! Here are some details about activities done at school and even afterschool!

During World Space Week our pupils participated in various activities related to space. Here are only some of them…

On our Monday Assembly, the entire school learnt about World Space Week from our Year 8 pupils. They then spent the week working on their innovations which they took to the science and innovators’ fair at Ilok, Inventum, where they won awards for some inventions.

During afterschool care the pupils spent the week exploring space via encyclopaedias and videos, doing vocabulary, spelling and reading worksheets about space, as well as playing card games made for them by our Year 7.

In Maths, our pupils worked on the idea of using linear equations to convert into Kelvin temperatures, inspired by their teacher’s research on NASA for educational ideas about how equations are used for space travel.

In English, our Year 8 pupils discussed the idea of possible space communication, inspired by the movie Arrival in which extra-terrestrials who arrive to our planet do not speak English and do not come to attack, but to give us the gift of extraordinary communication. We also discussed an extraordinary painting The Conversation of the Mutes which made us think about communication and how important it is. We learnt that words and ideas can change the world.

In Year 7 we discussed how we believe space research affects the environment on Earth, but also how space exploration could possibly assist with life on our planet or others. Some pupils were surprised when they learnt about noise pollution or sound pollution and realised how much even sound can affect life on Earth. We also read articles about possible and real inventions.

In German, our pupils learnt space-related vocabulary and prepared their class posters to show what they know.

In PE, our pupils discovered how astronauts train to stay fit!

During this year's Space Week, our Year 2 pupils read a newspaper article about the famous British astronaut, Tim Peake. The children were fascinated to learn about his adventures in space and his time aboard the International Space Station. They eagerly discussed Tim Peake's role as an astronaut and shared their thoughts on what it might be like to travel beyond Earth. Another fantastic part of Space Week was when the Year 2 pupils got to play a special set of Space Week cards, which were beautifully created by our talented Year 7 pupils.

Year 5 watched a video of 'A day in the life of an Astronaut'. Then they, as a class, wrote an acrostic poem for the word 'Astronaut' and tried their best to include interesting facts that we had learnt.

Year 6a did an extensive research about a space mission and made a project about it.

Y6B had a great time researching important historical space missions, gathering information, constructing posters with questions and answers, and then presenting to the class. We have many new space enthusiasts!

As you can see, SPACE HORIZONS are creative and brilliant, and we believe our curiosity can change the world! World Space Week was an amazing experience! We are looking forward to the next one!
